1888Where our story began
Maliyadeva College was founded in 1888 by the Buddhist Theosophical Society led by Colonel Henry Steel Olcott. From our home in Kurunegala, we have grown into one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most renowned schools.
A National School offering education from primary to advanced levels, the college brings together a community of students affectionately known as “Devans”. Learning, culture and character remain at the heart of college life, preparing generations to contribute to society.

The shield
The shield represents the power and courage of the college.
The ribbon
A maroon ribbon carries the name of the college.
The tusker
The tusker represents Athugalpura, or Kurunegala, the college’s home.
The lotus flowers
Three lotus flowers symbolise the Triple Gem.
The seven petals
Each flower’s seven petals represent Sath Koralaya, the region’s name during the monarchical era.
The motto
Vidya Bhushanam Purusha Bhushanam expresses the college motto: knowledge is the jewel of man.
The college flag
Our colours.
Our spirit.
Navy blue, golden yellow and maroon form the three horizontal stripes of the college flag, with the crest at its centre.
Through the years, the flag has carried the college spirit through celebrations and brought generations of Devans together.

As the moon shines in the sky, long last our mother school, with glamour and glory, Ignoring the difference, religion and cast she gives knowledge to everyone, making genius people with arts, crafts and all the science, May long last our mother school with honor and reputation like the moon in the sky.

Students are assigned to four houses according to their admission numbers. Named after past kings of Sri Lanka, the houses compete in the inter-house games.

Daily uniform
- Plain white shirt (without designs or special stitching) with the College Badge sown on the top right corner of the shirt pocket.
- White shorts.
- White socks of normal length.
- Simple black shoes with minimal designs.
Upper school students
Daily uniform
- Plain white shirt (without designs or special stitching) with the College Badge sown on the top right corner of the shirt pocket.
- White longs.
- White socks of normal length.
- Simple black shoes with minimal designs.
Special uniform
- Plain white long sleeve shirt
- College tie.
- White longs for Upper school and shorts for Primary students
- White socks of normal length.
- Simple black shoes with minimal designs.
- Board Members of Clubs & Societies may wear a Blazer with the College tie when necessary.
- Sportsmen and Prefects may wear a blue blazer at necessary events.

- Plain white long sleeve shirt, folded up to the elbow.
- White longs.
- White socks of normal length.
- Simple black shoes with minimal designs.
- Prefects' Badge at chest height (Under the College badge) on the center line of the shirt.
